Intro:

Web Wonks; builds online growth strategies using the Google stack of business products. Analytics, Ads, Shopping and more. We have Jeff McGregor from Web Wonks on the line.

Q.

H: So Jeff, what has been happening with Google search volumes during lockdown.

J: Hi Heather. Well the search volumes are still jumping all over the place, but we are seeing three patterns emerge.

Shock, which happened as lockdown took place – search volumes dropped as people hunkered down.

Step change, which showed a new normal in the patterns of consumption, so big search growth – ie, supermarkets, companies that sell masks - and these patterns are likely to sustain from this point forward.

Speed up, where we expect to see a lift back up to baseline search activity – think fast food.

Now obviously each industry is different, so you need to know what is going on with your own online data first. Once you have that, you can see what kind of pattern your industry is in. Retail for example, was unable to trade, but search volume was the highest its been in 12 months during lockdown – so opportunities exist.

Q.

H: Jeff how to companies get back to growing sales and leads?

J: Well the first thing is – understand your own data – now more than ever, having a handle on your website traffic and ad spend is critical.

You can book a one hour data health check through our website.

We also have 25 free how to guides on our website for anyone who wants to better understand Google products.
